“Cage of Tangled Lies” – A Cage Built Out of Promises

In the third track something narrows. The first two were about “them” — people whose expectations had to be met. This one speaks to a single person.

And it says the hardest thing first: “Your love is a prison, its walls made of lies.”

From “They” to “You”

“Chasing perfect shadows” and “Unheard in the Silence” do not contain a single “you.” Here “you” and “your” come up twelve times.

The shift matters more than it looks. You cannot talk to a crowd; at most you can let it down. One person you can speak to directly — and this is the first track on the record where someone tells someone to their face what they did.

No name is given. There is only “your words,” “your eyes,” “your lies.”

Bars Made of Promises

The cage in the title is not made of iron. The first verse says what it is made of: “Each promise a thread, pulling tight on my mind.”

In the second: “Each vow that you gave left my spirit more worn.” The lie here is not one big deception. It is hundreds of small reassurances, each of which sounded fine on its own.

Hence “tangled.” One thread is easy to cut. Tangled ones cannot be unpicked — they have to be torn all at once.

“Break! Break!”

The chorus opens with two shouted words: “Break! Break! From this cage of your lies.”

It is the first chorus of its kind on the record, and it starts a run. Track four has “Defy! Defy!”, track five “Free! Free!”, track six just “Run!” Four tracks in a row open the chorus with a shouted word.

The order is worth listening to: break, defy, free, run. These are not four versions of the same thing. They are four steps.

Forgetting Your Own Name

The strongest line closes the third verse: “In this tangle of lies, I’m forgetting my name.”

In the first track he was getting lost in his own reflections. Here he loses his name. It is one step further down the same road: first you no longer know which face is yours, then what you are called.

And yet the outro ends on a word the record has not used before: “I’ll find my way home.” This is the first “home.” In the final track it will come up twelve times.

You can hear the track on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music.

In the next post I will write about “Defy the Iron Crown” — about the shortest chorus on the record.

Thank you for being here.
