“Iron Will” – A Will Harder Than Other People’s Opinions

After the two darkest tracks on the record comes the moment when the character stops explaining himself.

“Iron Will” is the seventh track on “From Dust to Defiance” and the point where the whole story starts heading back up.

Words That Cut Like Steel

The song opens with: “They try to break me, their words cut like steel.”

For the first time on this record the opponent is not fate, not loss, not your own head. It is other people — their opinions, their expectations, and the confidence with which they rule on what will and will not work out for you.

That subject is personal for me. A project like Dust Anthem has collected comments from people who know better from day one. I have learned to listen to them, but I stopped giving them the final word.

A Throne Built From Ruins

The third verse holds the image I like most on the entire record: “I’m building my throne from the ruins of gray.”

Not from marble and not from victories. From what was left of the things that did not work out. It is exactly the thought behind the name of the whole project, said in different words.

The material for anything worthwhile is almost never new. It is usually the rubble of something that collapsed earlier.

A Chorus Built on a Fist

Musically this is the simplest track on the album, and that was deliberate. The chorus — “Iron will, I stand, I’ll never break or bend” — moves evenly, beat after beat, without a single ornament.

A declaration of stubbornness cannot be played with finesse, or it stops being a declaration. What was needed here was a rhythm you can drum out on a steering wheel.

In the early versions I tried weaving extra harmonies into the chorus and every time the song came out weaker for it. Simplicity here was not a lack of ideas but the only sensible answer.

Whose Opinion Actually Counts

This is not about listening to no one. It is about knowing whose opinion you take into account, and why that particular person.

A short list of people who genuinely care about you is worth more than a hundred opinions from people who risk nothing by voicing them.

The simplest test I know: will this person bear any consequence of what they are advising you to do. If they bear none, their confidence costs nothing and means nothing.

You can find the track on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music.

The next post takes one more step down before the record ends. “Fading Pulse” is a fight for a pulse that is weakening.

Thank you for reading.
