“Fall” – On the Collapse That Comes Before Rebirth

For a long time, I wondered whether this song should be on the record at all. “Fall” is the darkest and most melancholic moment of the entire “From Dust Reborn” EP — and that is exactly why, in the end, it could not be left out.

Today I will tell you about the penultimate chapter of this story. About the moment just before dawn, when the night is at its deepest.

Why the Fall Comes So Late

Someone might ask: the record already begins with a fall, so why return to it in the fifth track? The answer is simple and, unfortunately, very true to life.

The road upward is almost never a straight line. You can rebel, you can fight your battle, you can even sing your anthem — and then a day still comes when everything collapses again. “Fall” is about that second collapse. The more painful one, because it arrives just when it seemed the worst was behind us.

“I fell to the ground, my bones turned to dust.” That is the image this song begins with. But it is not the image it ends on.

The Most Important Word: “Again”

Hidden in the chorus of “Fall” is a line I consider the axis of the entire record: “I fall, I break, but I’m rising again.”

The key word here is “again.” The point is not to never fall. That is impossible. The point is for the number of times you get up to always be one greater than the number of times you fall. Every scar tells a story, and every wound teaches something. These are the bricks from which you rebuild what the song describes as taking back control of your own fate.

If you are listening to “Fall” during a difficult moment in your life, that one word is what I want you to remember from it.

Melancholy That Does Not Drag You Down

Musically, I was searching for balance between darkness and hope here. “Fall” is slower and more reflective than the previous tracks. There is more space in it, more silence, more room to breathe.

But I did not want this melancholy to crush the listener. That is why, as the song progresses, brighter colors gradually join the dark ones — all the way to the bridge, where an image appears of the ground being unable to hold the hero down any longer. It is a musical foreshadowing of what happens in the record’s finale.

Just Before Dawn

“Fall” deliberately ends unresolved. The hero declares that he will survive, but the listener does not yet know whether he will succeed. The answer only comes with the final track of the EP.

Listen to “Fall” on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube Music — ideally paired with the song I will write about next time.

Because in the next and final post of this series, I will tell you about “Reborn.” About the dawn after the longest night.

Thank you for coming this far with me.
